Prof. Shimon Sakaguchi won the Medal with Purple Ribbon.

The Japanese government recently announced the winners of this autumn's Medal of Honor. Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi, Prof. of IFReC won the Medal with Purple Ribbon, which is awarded to people who have made outstanding contributions in academic fields, arts and sports.

Prof. Sakaguchi discovered regulatory T cells (Tregs), which are present in normal animals and are specialized for immune suppression and tolerance. Since the discovery of Tregs, Dr. Sakaguchi and his group have greatly contributed to understanding the roles of Tregs in controlling a variety of physiological and pathological immune responses, including autoimmune disease, transplantation tolerance, and tumor immunity.
