[Science Café] The Global Spread of Drug Resistant Microbes

REPORT

On Wednesday, 6 November 2019, Dr. Yukihiro Akeda was invited as a guest to give a talk on "The Global Spread of Drug Resistant Microbes."

He explained in an easy to understand manner the mechanism of microbes acquiring drug resistance, the drug resistant microbes against which treatment is a high priority, and the threat of Carbapenem resistance overcoming the barrier of microbe strains. There are South East Asian countries where the waste water treatment rate is 5% or less and such an environment has facilitated the spread of communicable diseases. His talk made us all realize that this problem needs to be dealt with on global scale.

(Dr. Akeda is affiliated with the Section of Bacterial Drug Resistance Research in the Thailand-Japan Research Collaboration Center on Emerging and Re-emerging Infections at the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases.)
