WPI Joint Outreach Symposium

The second WPI joint outreach symposium "Let's enjoy the world's advanced science!" was held in Tsukuba-city on Nov. 24.

This event started in 2011 to encourage a close relationship between WPI scientists and high school students. The second symposium was held in Tsukuba International Congress Center (EPOCHAL TSUKUBA) co-organized by the International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (WPI-MANA) and other WPI institutes supported by Ibaraki Prefecture, an audience of 670 in total attended.

In the first half of the symposium, the mayor of Tsukuba-city and Dr. Toshio Kuroki, Program Director of WPI gave opening addresses. Afterward, Dr. Masakazu Aono, Director of WPI-MANA and scientists from the five WPI institutes lectured about their recent research. From IFReC, Prof. Tomohiro Kurosaki gave a talk titled "Answer to the mystery behind immune memory" which engaged the audience. In the second half, the students enjoyed quizzes about science topics. At the end of the event, students and scientists spoke freely with one another and enjoyed experiments at each booth.
