MHCはペプチド抗原をT細胞に提示することで、免疫応答において中心的な役割を担っております。一方、MHCは自己免疫疾患をはじめ、アレルギー疾患、がん、神経変性疾患の強い疾患遺伝子としても知られております。しかし、MHCがどのように疾患発症に関与しているかは、いまだに明らかになっておりません。我々は、MHCが細胞内の異常たんぱく質を細胞外へ輸送し、それが「ネオセルフ」として自己免疫疾患の発症に関与しているというMHCの新たな機能を見出しました。そこで、我々は、このMHCの新たな機能を標的にして、様々な疾患の発症機構の解明とそれに基づく治療法の開発に取り組んでおります（図１）。 また、免疫は病原体に対する感染防御システムであるため、免疫システムは病原体と密接な関係を保ちながら進化してきたと考えられます。また、免疫細胞には、活性化を制御する様々な正負のレセプターが存在します。特に、我々は抑制化と活性化レセプターと対になったペア型レセプターを介した宿主病原体相互作用を解析しております。我々の研究により新たな病原体の免疫逃避機構（図２）、さらに、新たな生体防御機構が明らかになってきました（図３）。
