It is convenient to register your bank account for monthly payments of your apartment’s utilities. It can be opened immediately on the date of application, however, it takes about one week to receive a cash card by post. Services at the bank/post office are limited to weekdays during the day but the ATM is available in early morning, night time and weekends as well.

All post offices have ATMs. They accept not only JP Bank's cash card but other affiliated banks ones. | NOTE: Remittance services from/to your bank account are not permitted for foreigners who have stayed in Japan less than six months (However, you can pay utility fees, etc. from your account). There are many ways to send money from your bank in Japan to an account in abroad. Usually, you will be asked to pay a commission fee to your bank in Japan, - the intermediary bank(s) and to beneficiary bank. The amount of the fee (approx. 2,000 to 9,000yen for one transaction) as well as the time for the transaction (several days to weeks) varies according to the bank and the country
If you have an account at JP bank, there are two ways to send money; “Account transfer” =Kouzakan soukin (口座間送金): Sending money via your JP bank account. “Payment to account” =Kouza ate soukin (口座あて送金): Bring cash to the JP bank and send the money. You are not eligible to send and receive money by “account transfer” if you have not been in Japan more than 6 months since your landing date. After 6 months, you may ask the JP bank to add the remittance function. You are able to send money by “payment to account” method even if your length of stay in Japan is less than 6 months. Commission fee (at JP BK): 2,500yen Intermediatory bank(s) and beneficiary bank take additional commission fees.

The commission fee defers according to the amount of the savings in your account. SMBC Trust Bank ATMs are only located several places in central Osaka city but you are able to use Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation branch ATMs (no commission fee on Weekdays 8:45-18:00), the Seven Eleven ATMs (convenience store) and Japan Post Bank ATMs with your PRESTIA cash card.
