You must have a valid Japanese driver's license, International driver's license or driver's license of a foreign country which does not issue International driver's licenses (Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium
and Taiwan) when you drive a car in Japan.
*Please note that a Japanese translation done by JAF(Japan Automobile Federation) or the embassy is required.
If you have Japanese driver's license, you can drive until the date of expiration, If you have International driver's license or a driver's license of Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium and Taiwan, you are
allowed to drive for one year from the date you arrived in Japan.
If you have foreign driver's license and you are able to prove total of over three-month stay in the country where you obtained the
license, you can change it to Japanese driver's license in the local driver's license center in Japan after taking written and practical tests.
