Gaucher disease is caused by the activation of microglia (Yamasaki G, in Immunity)

PRESS RELEASE

Gaucher's disease is a disease develops due to the systemic accumulation of glucosylceramide. Althogh the disorders of central nervous system are particularly severe, the detailed molecular mechanisms are unknown and there are no effective treatments.
The research group led by Sho Yamasaki (RIMD, IFReC, CiDER, and CAMaD) revealed the direct activation of microglia by β-glucosylceramide causes phagocytosis of neurons that exacerbates Gaucher disease.
